Tesla Motors ruled the market for battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) in the United States for many years. No other company made BEVs that were as popular and grew its network of DC fast chargers as quickly (DCFC). Not only was it cool to own a Tesla, but it was also almost useful.
But now that the Ford Mustang Mach-E is out, Ford Motor Company has a car that can compete with the Tesla Model Y. The Mustang Mach-E and Model Y are compact SUVs, which makes them enticing for consumers who want an electric vehicle but don't want to give up the versatility of crossover SUV ownership.
Which one should you choose? This comparison between the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E and the 2022 Tesla Model Y will help you find the most important differences between these two electric crossover SUVs.
The Value and Cost

Despite a price range of $43,895 to $61,995 for the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E (without the $1,100 destination tax), Ford ceased taking reservations for the 2022 model in April 2022. Depending on your location, there may be an unclaimed Mustang Mach-E in dealer inventory. Ford will reportedly begin accepting orders for the 2023 Mach-E on August 15, 2022.
Ford will sell four model options for its 5-passenger electric crossover SUV in 2022: Select, Premium, California Route 1, and GT. Except for the GT, all trims come standard with a rear electric-drive motor and rear-wheel drive (RWD). The Ford Mustang Mach-E GT is equipped with a front-mounted electric motor and all-wheel drive (AWD). A dual-motor configuration is offered on the remaining trim levels.
Ford also sells normal and extended-range battery pack. The GT employs a larger battery pack to maximise performance; it is significantly faster than other Mach-E crossovers, but less energy-efficient. All 2022 and 2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E SUVs are eligible for a federal tax credit of $7,500.
The Mustang Mach-E provides more linked services than comparable Ford vehicles. Its remote access features permit locking the doors, activating the climate control, and opening the windows and liftgate. It also has a digital key component that allows you to access and drive this EV using your smartphone. In the Sync infotainment interface, you may enable 911 Assist for automated collision notification. The Wi-Fi hotspot comes with a three-month free trial.
Ford does not provide complimentary scheduled maintenance. The manufacturer suggests tyre rotation and a multi-point examination every year or 10,000 kilometers.
Pricing information for the 2022 Tesla Model Y runs from $59,990 to $69,990, excluding the $1,200 destination fee. As of this publishing, Tesla's website only lists the Model Y Long Range and Model Y Performance trim levels. However, in April 2022, Tesla introduced a Model Y AWD trim level as well. It is the first Tesla Model Y manufactured at the company's newest Gigafactory in Austin, Texas. Customers with current orders were apparently offered the option to switch to the Texas-built Tesla Model Y, despite the fact that Tesla is not officially accepting orders for the new basic model.
Standard on every Tesla Model Y 2022 is AWD through two motors. Standard seating capacity is for five passengers; an occasional-use, two-passenger third-row seat is optional. Tesla vehicles are no longer eligible for federal tax credits.
The Model Y's connected services include standard remote access functions as well as the option to offer remote access to family members who need to operate the vehicle. In addition, you will receive an automated collision warning and a digital key.
You can activate PIN to Drive if you're worried about theft. Sentry mode captures video of prospective intrusions. Dog mode maintains the climate control while your dog waits in the Y and shows a message to animal rights activists informing them that Prince is comfortable and you'll be back shortly. The Enhanced Autopilot package adds Smart Summon, allowing you to summon your Model Y in parking lots.
Every Tesla Model Y is equipped with a Wi-Fi hotspot that connects to the navigation system. If you wish to stream videos or use Sentry mode, you must purchase a premium connectivity subscription.
Tesla does not offer complimentary maintenance services. Tesla encourages customers to rotate the Model Y's tyres "after 6,250 miles or if the tread depth difference is 2/32 inch or larger" despite the fact that the business does not mandate scheduled maintenance or inspections.
Dependability
The Ford Mustang Mach-E is too new to be included in the J.D. Power 2022 Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS), which evaluates problems reported by vehicle owners during the third year of ownership. In the J.D. Power 2022 U.S. Initial Quality Study of Compact SUVs, the Mach-E does not place among the top three vehicles (IQS). In the J.D. Power 2022 U.S. Electric Vehicle Experience (EVX) Ownership Study, which measures EV owner happiness, the Mustang Mach-E ranks second among Mass-Market BEVs. The Ford Mustang Mach-E 2022 is covered by the following warranties:
- Standard warranty duration: three years or 36,000 miles
- Warranty on the powertrain for 5 years or 60,000 miles
- High-voltage battery and electric vehicle component warranty: 8 years or 100,000 miles (10 years or 150,000 miles in California emissions states)
- 5-year or 60,000-mile roadside assistance
The Tesla Model Y, like the Mustang Mach-E, is too new to be included in the 2022 VDS. Although Tesla's electric compact crossover participated in the 2022 IQS, it is ineligible for honors since Tesla Motors does not provide J.D. Power with access to owner information in the 15 U.S. states where such access is required by law. In the 2022 EVX, the Tesla Model Y ranks second among Premium BEVs. The Tesla Model Y 2022 is covered by the following warranties:
- Standard warranty terms are four years or 50,000 miles.
- Warranty on the powertrain for eight years or 120,000 miles
- High-voltage battery and electric vehicle component warranty: 8 years or 120,000 miles (10 years or 150,000 miles in California emissions states)
- 4-year or 50,000-mile roadside assistance
Performance
If you choose a RWD 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E with a standard-range, 70-kilowatt-hour battery pack, your car will produce 266 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque, and Ford estimates that it will reach 60 miles per hour in around 5.8 seconds. The ability to drive with only one pedal is standard. With two motors and the standard range battery pack, the Mach-torque E's rating jumps to 428 pound-feet, and acceleration from zero to sixty miles per hour is estimated to take only 5.2 seconds.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates the range and energy consumption of the RWD Ford Mustang Mach-E with the standard-range pack at 247 miles and 32.6 kWh/100 miles, respectively. Standard Mach-E range with AWD is assessed at 224 miles and 36.3 kWh/100 miles by the EPA.
The 91-kWh battery pack with longer range is offered beginning with the Premium trim. Equipped like so, the RWD Mach-E produces 290 horsepower and has a longer range, but it is slower owing to its bigger battery pack. All-wheel-drive Mach-E crossovers perform better: they have a longer range, generate 346 horsepower, and reach 60 miles per hour faster.
Extended-range RWD cars are rated at 303 miles of range and 34.6 kWh/100 miles, while AWD variants are rated at 277 miles and 37.1 kWh/100 miles by the EPA. With its updated software, the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E California Route 1 has a longer range with both drive configurations. It achieves 314 miles and 33.3 kWh/100 miles when equipped with RWD and 312 miles and 34.3 kWh/100 miles when equipped with AWD.
Depending on whether the Performance Edition option package is installed, the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E GT produces 480 horsepower and 600 or 634 pound-feet of torque. Ford claims that your electric small SUV will be capable of hitting 60 mph in less than four seconds, regardless of powertrain. EPA-estimated range decreases to 270 miles (260 with Performance package) and energy consumption rises to 40,2 kWh/100 miles (41.2 kWh on GT Performance).
Although it is feasible to charge a BEV using a conventional 110-volt outlet if you have the time, the majority of 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E owners will prefer to install Level 2 charging at home to reduce the waiting time. Additionally, owners of the Mustang Mach-E have access to the BlueOval Charge Network. When purchasing a 2022 Mustang Mach-E, you receive 250 kWh of free charging at Electrify America stations.
Ford does not release a tow rating for the 2022 Mustang Mach-E in U.S. configuration.
The standard 2022 Tesla Model Y AWD manufactured in Texas is equipped with a 91-kW front electric-drive motor and a 200-kW rear electric-drive motor. Tesla used a newly developed battery pack with 4680 cells into the Model Y's construction. The EPA estimates the basic model's range to be 279 miles and energy consumption to be 28 kWh/100 miles, making it more efficient than any 2022 Mustang Mach-E.
Tesla Model Y Long Range 2022 use essentially the same electric motors. The EPA estimates a range of 330 miles and 28 kWh/100 miles. Tesla boasts that it will reach 60 mph in 4.8 seconds.
The Model Y Performance accelerates to 60 mph one second faster and has a peak speed of 155 mph. It has 133-kW front and 179-kW rear electric motors for propulsion. The EPA estimates a range of 303 miles and 30 kWh/100 miles.
Tesla Model Y owners have access to the Tesla Supercharger network, which offers Level 3 DCFC and largely alleviates range anxiety when traveling. The Model Y's (and all Tesla's) advantage over all other BEVs on the market continues to be the network's extensive coverage.
The Model Y 2022 is rated to haul 3,500 pounds with an optional tow kit.
Range
Model y offers range and performance. The Model Y Long Range has a maximum range of 330 miles whereas the Model Y Performance has a maximum range of 303 miles.
Standard-range Mustang Mach-E cars have a rear-wheel drive range of 247 miles and an all-wheel drive range of 224 miles. With the extended-range battery, these distances increase to 303 and 277 miles, respectively allowing longer-distance travel. The AWD California Route 1 has a range of 312 miles on a full charge, while the GT has a range of 270 miles in its standard configuration and 260 miles with the Performance Edition, which increases the model's power and torque and decreases its acceleration time.
Features
All Model Ys have a stark, minimalist cabin with a 15-inch touchscreen that serves as both the instrument cluster and the infotainment system, including video streaming and video games, but without Apple CarPlay or Android Auto connection. Both trim levels include an abundance of active safety features (e.g., automated emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane keeping, and adaptive cruise control), as well as heated front and rear seats, a glass roof, a 360-degree dash cam that provides vehicle surveillance, and a Dog Mode that keeps the cabin comfortable for your furry companions when you must leave them in the vehicle for a while. Similarly, the 2022 ford mustang Mach-E gives the electric crossover good looks and agility.
In addition, Model Y owners get access to the automaker's massive and proprietary Supercharger network for rapid charging. The Long Range variant is available with a two-seat third row for $3000; however, adults of average size cannot fit in that row.
