How to Save Thousands of Dollars When Installing a Home EV Charger

How to Save Thousands of Pounds When Installing a Home EV Charger (United Kingdom)

By Aris Sevilla

Electricity and petrol costs have increase putting a tremendous burden on household finances.

If the cost of charging is likely to grow and put additional pressure on your pocketbook, electric car owners and those considering purchasing one may hesitate, especially when it comes to installing an EV charger at home.

Not that keeping with a petrol or diesel vehicle is cheaper, because we've all witnessed the big price increases at the pump over the last weeks and months.

There are various methods to save money on your electric car charging, as well as the cost of installing a home EV charger if you don't already have one. Electric vehicles remain the most cost-effective (and ecologically beneficial) vehicles to purchase.

Request a Government Grant

If you live in a flat or leased property, you may apply for the Electric Vehicle Homecharge Programme, which can lower the cost and installation of a charging device for your electric car by up to 75%, or £350.

This is a grant distributed by the Office of Zero Emission Vehicles.

This programme is no longer available to homeowners of bungalows, detached homes, semi-detached houses, and other "single unit" properties.

Employ a Technician to Install Your Charger for You

Always look to contact a competent installation firm if you intend to install an EV charging device in your house or business.

In addition to saving money, it's important to note that having a professional install your electric car charger is a more safer alternative that assures your device functions correctly and does not pose a risk to your property.

Increase Your Home's Efficiency by Installing Solar Panels

It is not required to have solar panels installed on your home or property in order to install an electric vehicle charger, but it can save you a significant amount of money on electricity over time.

Several modern EV chargers are outfitted with energy storage devices, which may conserve extra electricity and store it for later use.

If you are producing your own electricity through solar panels, your electric vehicle could use this stored energy as its primary source (meaning you are not using electricity from the grid and are therefore not paying tariffs) and then switch to a main electricity supply.

There are incentives available to minimize the expenses associated with installing solar panels on your house, such as the government-backed ECO3 fund, which is open to both homeowners and renters.

Install the Proper EV Charger

As previously stated, you don't need solar panels to lower the cost of recharging your electric car (although it helps), and most current EV chargers include built-in cost-reduction mechanisms.

Numerous intelligent EV chargers include built-in technology that monitors the unit cost of power throughout the day and only charges your car when electricity costs are at their lowest.

This ensures that you always spend the least amount possible to keep your electric car charged.

You may also save money by selecting the appropriate type of EV charger based on the desired charging speed of your car.

Rapid chargers are not cost efficient if you just need a home charger to leave your car plugged in overnight, or if you plan to use your home charger for longer charges and public chargers for a top up.

You should carefully consider how you intend to handle the charging of your electric vehicle and choose an appropriate EV charger.

Whenever Feasible, Keep the Battery between 20% and 80% Charged

In addition to selecting the appropriate EV charger, you may lower your charging expenses by optimizing how you keep your vehicle's battery charged.

As often as possible, keep your battery's recommended charge level between 20 and 80 percent.

This is not only better for the durability of the car, but it may also save you money, as the majority of the cost is incurred during the first and last 20% of charging.

With a Properly Fitted EV Charger at Home, You May Save Money

Considering that the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles will be prohibited in the United Kingdom by the end of the decade, switching to an electric vehicle is a great way to not only reduce the ongoing costs of owning and maintaining a fuel car, but also reduce the environmental impact of driving.

And by having a professionally fitted EV charger at home, you can minimize the expenses of managing your vehicle's charging even further by utilizing the aforementioned guidelines to keep your costs low and your electric car's battery efficient.

Almost all installers are certified and licensed professionals who will work with you to ensure that your charger is installed in the optimal location.
