Porsche isn't directly targeting the Tesla Model Y with the new Macan EV, but the two vehicles have many surprising similarities
A new Macan EV is likely to be Porsche's most popular electric model. Following in the footsteps of the gas-burning Macan, Porsche's most popular model (over 800,000 have been sold since its launch almost a decade ago), the Macan electric vehicle may take the German brand electric.
While it has the tech, looks, badge, and performance to compete with the Tesla Model Y, which is practically identical in size and much cheaper, it may struggle to beat it. We know the Porsche will feel more opulent and high-quality even without seeing one because it's slightly bigger and has a greater battery pack.
The Tesla is so good that EV Macan purchasers may still choose it. Let's examine these similar yet different-priced sporty electric crossovers.

The PPE platform, shared with the Audi Q6 E-Tron and more cars soon, has an 800-volt electrical architecture for industry-leading EV charging. Porsche claims that up to 270 kW can charge the Macan from 10 to 80 percent in 22 minutes or add 60 miles of range in 4 minutes.
Tesla's 400-volt Model Y battery pack requires more amperage than the Porsche's to charge quickly. Even at 400 volts, the Model Y can charge at 210 kW, adding 200 miles of range in 15 minutes. Not as fast as an 800-volt Macan EV, but it's close.
Dimensions And Usability
Porsche Macan EV proportions are remarkably equal to the Tesla Model Y, despite its marketing.
Its length is 4,784 mm (188.34 inches), its wheelbase is 2,893 mm (113.9 inches), and its width, including mirrors, is 2,152 mm (84.7 inches). Compare that to the Model Y's 4,751 mm (187-inch) length, 2,890 mm (113.8-inch) wheelbase, and 2,129 mm (83.8-inch) width with mirrors, and it seems Porsche was striving to match its dimensions.
The Macan is 2 mm lower than the Model Y, making it 1,622 mm tall. Porsches with air suspension have somewhat better ground clearance, which can be modified.
Despite their similar footprints and dimensions, the Porsche is heavier than the Tesla. According to the manufacturer, the standard Macan 4 weighs 5,136 pounds, but the Model Y models weigh under 4,400 pounds.

It accelerates from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 5.2 seconds and 137 mph. With 630 horsepower and 833 pound-feet of torque, the top-tier Macan Turbo can reach 62 mph in 3.3 seconds and 161 mph.
The Model Y Long Range boasts a dual-motor configuration with 384 horsepower and 376 pound-feet of torque and can reach 60 mph in 4.8 seconds, although independent tests suggest it is faster. The Model Y Performance makes 456 horsepower and 497 pound-feet of torque, claiming 3.5 seconds to 60 mph. The Long Range Tesla Model Y can reach 135 mph and the Performance 155 mph.
Since Porsche has only given sprint times to 100 km/h, we're comparing 0 to 60 and 0 to 62 mph times here. US-specific data will be announced as the vehicle nears its second-half 2024 American market launch.
Comparisons show that the Model Y is a great value, with the Long Range version outaccelerating the Macan 4 and almost matching its top speed. Model Y's Performance can't equal the Macan Turbo's acceleration time (which we think will be faster with sticky tires and the correct conditions), but it's close.
Interior Luxury, Features, And Tech
Porsche markets the Macan EV as more luxurious than the Tesla Model Y. This is reflected in the beginning price and some options.
Back-wheel steering, a $2,040 option for the Macan electric car and a Macan first, is another luxury feature. Rear wheels with a maximum steering angle of 5 degrees reduce the Macan EV's turning circle radius from 39.6 to 36.4 feet and make it more agile at low speeds. When the rear wheels turn in the same direction as the fronts, rear-wheel steering stabilizes the car in high-speed turns.
Up to three front screens, including a curved digital gauge cluster, are available for the Macan EV. Model Y has simply the main infotainment screen and no additional screens. An augmented reality head-up display promises to display navigation and other information on the windscreen.
The Model Y has party tricks but neither of these. The big ones are Autopilot (and the option to opt into the Full Self-Driving Beta program, which adds even more advanced autonomous driving features) and cameras all around the vehicle that can be used as dash cams while driving and as a Sentry Mode to keep an eye on the vehicle while parked.
Porsche And Tesla Model Y Comparison In Pricing
Porsche charges $80,450 (destination price included) for a Macan 4 and $106,950 for the Turbo. With the options most purchasers choose, the Macan 4 can cost over $100,000, while the Turbo can cost over $130,000 and even $160,000. Unless leased, the Macan does not qualify for tax benefits like the Tesla.
Tesla Model Y Long Range starts at $48,990, significantly more affordable. You can pay $1,000 or $2,000 more for an alternate finish besides Stealth Grey. 20-inch Induction wheels cost $2,000, and the tow hitch and cool white inside cost $1,000.
Full Self-Driving costs $12,000, while the seven-seater costs $3,000. A fully loaded Model Y Long Range costs just under $70,000. The Model Y Performance has most of the same choices, except for the Überturbine 21 wheels and third row of seats. A fully loaded Model Y Performance costs just over $70,000, starting at $52,490.
Before the $7,500 federal tax credit that Tesla is eligible for in 2024, that's a considerable price disparity. Some Macan electric car consumers may choose Tesla because of its affordability and characteristics advantages.
