Tinting your Tesla Car

Tinting your Tesla Car

By Aris Sevilla

Tinting one's car is a common practice among owners of expensive vehicles, and Tesla drivers are no exception. Tint, for example, may give a car a whole new personality. Also, the ride quality is improved with Tesla window tint. Quality window tint blocks heat protects interiors and ensures ultimate sun protection.

What should you tint in your Tesla?

Completely closing off the side and back windows are your best bet for maximum security. The rear windshield is a fantastic safety feature, especially if you have young children in the car.

Most new automobiles have factory-installed window tint, thus readings from a meter placed on the glass won't be accurate. This Model 3 shows an untinted VLT of 80%, for instance. The optimal configuration for a Tesla Model 3 is 35% on all side windows and 50% on the rear windshield. But, the fact that we are in Tennessee is the sole explanation for it.

How can I know whether it is legal in my state?

In terms of tint percentages, each state has its own regulations. The front, back, and windshield tinting rules are rather specific. State laws typically mandate that tinted front windshields be applied above the AS1 line.

For what time period does tinting provide protection?

A high-quality tint job can last the lifespan of the car. The risk of bubbling and purpling is normally covered throughout the lifetime of the product.

What causes tint to bubble or change color?

Over time, the sun's heat will weaken the adhesive on low-quality tint, causing it to come away from the glass and form bubbles. When applied properly, high-quality tints like ceramic should never bubble or become purple. In fact, it's guaranteed for life. If the tint is "purpling" or "bubbling," it was likely fitted poorly and should be replaced with higher-quality film.

What is the price?

There is a wide range of possibilities here, depending on your location and the shade you pick. Price ranges from $ 400 to $1 200 for ceramic tint at a good business. The cost to tint your car's windows with a product like 3M Crystalline will be well over $1,000. The Model 3 in particular is expensive because of the large size of the back glass and the expertise required for effective installation. There are many electronic components in Tesla automobiles, therefore it is important to take yours to a service center that is knowledgeable about working on these vehicles.

Questions you should ask your installer:

It's important to question your installer if the back window is installed in one or two sections. One's own tastes will dictate this. Having it in two parts will be cheaper and quicker to install, but if you don't mind the seam in the middle, I like the look of a single piece.

When installing the rear window, are you aware of how delicate the defroster is? Since the area around the defroster lines is notoriously difficult to polish, many installers resort to using abrasive products. However, the defroster in a Tesla won't operate if you cut even a single wire, and that may be a costly problem to solve.

How can you guarantee the security of your electronics? One method we use to prevent soap and water from penetrating the rear windshield and damaging the electronics is to hang a rope of soap there.

How does one go about installing tinting?

In a nutshell, the steps involved in putting window tint include cleaning, heat shrinking, and internal installation. It would be exceedingly difficult to shrink it from the inside, so instead, it's shrunk from the outside. Envision putting it to the Model 3's back window!

Do-it-yourself window tinting options

It takes a lot of time and practice to get good at tinting, and the margin for mistakes is narrow. There may be more bubbles and particles in an installation performed by a novice. In addition, a Tesla has a lot more electronics than a conventional internal combustion engine car, so you need to be careful not to damage them and end up spending more money than you would have.

Tint Varieties:

Dyed is less expensive, but it won't hold up as long as the other options. Because of bubbling, it will eventually need to be replaced.

Metalized; a metallic finish. Its amazing light reflectivity, yet its metal content makes it a potential mobile phone signal disruptor.

Hybrid, including both dyed and metalized varieties. There is a nice balance between darkness and brightness in this mix. I recommend this option over having it colored or metalized if cost is a concern.

Carbon: This alternative is superior since it incorporates carbon particles into the film. It's more attractive and functional than metalized in that it blocks more heat without disrupting cell signals.

Also, among the Tesla community, the terms "ceramic" and "crystalline" are the most common:

Ceramic - 3M's ceramic tint is what we most often utilize. It blocks virtually all ultraviolet light, minimizes glare, blocks signals, and lowers temperatures. With decreased utilization of air conditioning, a Tesla's range increases. Learn more about it here.

The crystalline shade is 3M's standard for superior tinting. It's thinner than a post-it note and more transparent, yet it still has all the heat-blocking properties you'd expect from a tint. The price of this one will exceed $1,000.
